چکیده

The range of Shovelnose Sturgeon (SVS) Scaphirhynchus pla-torynchus in the great rivers of central North America has contracted, but most remaining populations are considered stable, likely due to a combination of successful harvest regulations and longitudinal continuity of many river reaches, despite damming in upper reaches. The evolutionary relationships of SVS relative to sister taxa is still a matter of debate. Genetic diversity varies across the range, with substantial haplotype overlap among SVS and its congeners. Shovelnose Sturgeon mature early at 5–7 years, and spawn every 2– 3 years. Some individuals may spawn in fall. Whether this species migrates is debatable, but individuals move long distances with larvae dispersing greater than 250 km, and adults moving >1900 km. Shovelnose Sturgeon appear to complete all aspects of their life cycle in the main channel of rivers, with sand and associated dunes playing an important role in station holding even at high flows. The greatest threats to this species include river temperatures exceeding 26°C that may impair growth and survival of young life stages, dams that impair movement during spring flooding, loss of critical mid-channel island habitats which may be important nursery areas, and increases in harvest pressure for the caviar trade. Given the broad distribution of this species across the jurisdiction of multiple states in the US, a species-wide conservation plan should be in place to ensure that SVS populations remain stable or increase.

Use of Ultrasound Imaging to Determine Sex of Shovelnose Sturgeon

—During November 2002, 51 shovelnose sturgeon Scaphirhynchus platorynchus were sexed by ultrasound imaging using a portable ultrasonograph. We identified males with 96% accuracy (N 5 25) and females with 80% accuracy (N 5 25); one hermaphroditic individual was misidentified as a male. Overall, ultrasound imaging was 86% accurate. Sex in postspawned females was difficult to determine, 60% being ...

Reproductive Isolation in Sympatric Populations of Pallid and Shovelnose Sturgeon

—Pallid sturgeon Scaphirhynchus albus and shovelnose sturgeon S. platorynchus are recognized morphologically as separate species. A previous genetic study with allozymes was unable to distinguish between the two species or demonstrate their reproductive isolation in regions of sympatry. Our main objective was to measure the genetic variability within and among populations of pallid and shovelno...

Antagonists to the Wnt cascade exhibit sex-specific expression in gonads of sexually mature shovelnose sturgeon.

Little is known regarding molecular mechanisms involved in sex determination and differentiation in sturgeon species. We addressed this knowledge gap by using next generation pyrosequencing technology to provide transcript libraries and species-specific sequences for mature gonads of shovelnose sturgeon, Scaphirhynchus platorynchus. We then mined these libraries to identify gender-specific tran...

Mitochondrial-DNA Variation in Pallid and Shovelnose Sturgeons, Scaphirhynchus (Pisces: Acipenseridae)

Sequencing analysis was used to characterize a mtDNA D-Ioop amplicon of 838 bp. Four pallid sturgeons, Scaphirhynchus albus, and four shovelnose sturgeons, S. platorynchus, from four states (Illinois, Louisiana, Montana, North Dakota) were used for this analysis. DNA sequencing ofthe nine fish revealed eleven polymorphic sites and six distinct haplotypes. No fixed nucleotide substitutions were ...

Genetic evidence for hybridization of pallid and shovelnose sturgeon.

To determine the genetic origin of individual sturgeon that are morphologically intermediate to pallid (Scaphirhynchus albus) and shovelnose (Scaphirhynchus platorhynchus) sturgeon, we combined previously published mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and microsatellite data with additional microsatellite data. Two sympatric populations of pallid and shovelnose sturgeon from the upper Missouri River and a...
